November Openings Themed Visit

In December, Inhotim’s Educational team invites you to itineraries and reflections that showcase the new exhibitions on view at the Lago and Fonte Galleries. Drawing on the Quilombo newspaper, published by the Black Experimental Theater, an initiative led by Abdias Nascimento, the exhibitions are part of Inhotim’s Abdias Nascimento Program.

The mediated visit takes place every Saturday and Sunday in December – including the December 8 holiday – always at 2 pm. To participate, please register in advance at the Reception at 1:40 pm, as the activity is limited to 25 visitors.

About the Visit

Committed to a central agenda for raising awareness of the leading role of black people, the newspaper Quilombo: vida, problemas e aspirações do negro [Quilombo: life, problems and aspirations of the black] was created by the Teatro Experimental do Negro (Black Experimental Theater–TEN), by Abdias Nascimento, at the turn of the 1940s to the 1950s. The publication claimed the human and sociocultural values of the Brazilian black in the proposals of the topics discussed by its editorial board.

Over ten issues, artists, intellectuals, thinkers and workers addressed demands that today can be recognized as affirmative actions. In this sense, thinking about an overview of the black press in Brazil that includes the publication is thinking about a documentary record of the struggles of the black movement, the actions of the TEN and Abdias Nascimento.

In November, Inhotim opened two new exhibitions that have the Quilombo newspaper as their starting point: O Mundo é o Teatro do Homem, at the Fonte Gallery, and Quilombo: vida, problemas e aspirações do negro, at the Lago Gallery. The exhibitions are part of the Abdias Nascimento and the Black Art Museum Program, and will be on view through July 16, 2023.
