What Is a Seed?

The most unexpected reflections can arise from the simplest questions. This is the guiding principle behind the “What Is…?” series. Rather than seeking definitive answers, the program aims to open up new perspectives through different languages and approaches to the same question.

On November 30, “What Is a Seed?” welcomes nutritionist Neide Rigo (São Paulo) and the Afro-Brazilian carnival street band Bloco Afro Magia Negra (Minas Gerais). Each offers a unique response to the question: the band presents a musical performance, while Neide leads a conversation followed by an activity in the gardens of Inhotim.

Note: In the event of rain, activity locations may be subject to change.

10:30 a.m. – Food Sovereignty and Seeds as a Common Good with Neide Rigo (São Paulo)

Neide Rigo invites participants to discuss the importance of seeds as capsules of life on our planet. The nutritionist will address the relevance of seeds for the common good, as one of the pillars of biodiversity and food sovereignty. Following this, she will guide a walk to identify and collect edible plant species—both conventional and unconventional—that grow in the grounds of Inhotim. Finally, the seeds gathered in the gardens will be planted.

Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes | Location: Viveiro Educador | Age Rating: All ages

2:30 p.m. – Erê Magic: The Seed of World Creation with Bloco Afro Magia Negra (Minas Gerais)

This experience encourages reflection on the seed of life through a Black-centered pedagogical approach, grounded in the Afro-literacy practice of Bloco Afro Magia Negra. In this musical performance, participants will have the opportunity to experience core practices rooted in the civilizational values of

the mitochondrial DNA of the African world—including songs, stories, corpo-oralidades or embodied oral traditions, drums, and the making of the tambor de mar or ocean drum.

Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes | Location: Tamboril [B1] | Age Rating: All ages
