Zhang Huan studied art at Henan University in Kaifeng (China, 1988) and at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing (1993). In addition to his work in sculpture and photography, he is also known for performances that test his own physical and mental endurance. His work addresses issues of politics, religion, tradition, cultural erasure, and overpopulation in China.

The artist uses materials that evoke Chinese culture, such as ashes and incense, and also makes references to masters of Eastern history, such as Confucius and Buddha. He has exhibited at the Venice Biennale (Italy, 2013), the Shanghai Biennale (China, 2010), the Lyon Biennale (France, 2000), among others. Among his most important exhibitions is... Zhang Huan: nas cinzas da história, at The State Hermitage Museum (Russia, 2020).
