William Kentridge holds degrees in political and African studies (University of the Witwatersrand) and fine arts (Johannesburg Art Foundation). The socio-political conditions in post-apartheid South Africa are evident in the artist's work, which includes drawings, objects, videos, and installations. By blending social awareness with irony, the artist employs dramatic narrative in works that reveal both technical and poetic experimentation. The notion of "fortune" (chance, luck, or something constantly evolving) is part of his artistic process, as are transience and memory.
Kentridge participated in the Venice Biennale (1993, 1999, 2005 and 2015), and in Documenta in Kassel, Germany (1997, 2002, 2012). Between 2012 and 2015, the exhibition Fortuna He toured Latin America, including Brazil.
