Waltercio Caldas studied painting at the MAM – Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, in 1964, where he was a disciple of Ivan Serpa. His sculptures, objects, drawings, and installations feature a combination of different materials, many of them unconventional. His work, in addition to being marked by minimalist forms, makes use of humor and irony to dismantle the certainties of viewers by questioning their visual perception.
Among the exhibitions in which he participated, noteworthy are editions of the São Paulo Biennial (Brazil), the Venice Biennale (Italy), Documenta in Kassel (Germany), and the Mercosur Biennial. In 2001, the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center – Rio de Janeiro held the first retrospective exhibition of his work. Waltercio Caldas 1985-2000.
