Tunga's vast body of work encompasses photographs, sculptures, drawings, videos, and performances, referencing diverse fields of knowledge such as literature, psychoanalysis, and science. Materials like magnets, glass, felt, and rubber, as well as bones and fluids, were used not only for their physical characteristics but also for their symbolic aspects and historical references. 

The term "instaurations," coined by the artist to describe works constructed through performative actions, permeates much of his oeuvre. Tunga was the first contemporary artist to exhibit at the Musée du Louvre in Paris (France, 2005). His major exhibitions also include the São Paulo Biennial (Brazil), the Venice Biennale (Italy), the Havana Biennial (Cuba), and Documenta in Kassel (Germany).
