One of the elements that underlies Tunga's work is the image of the circle – a geometric form that evokes the idea of continuous movement and alludes to metaphors of development, such as the cycle of life. Toro is a topological space resulting from two circles: the outer one and the inner one, encompassing the space between them and the internal void. The artist's interest in the torus stems from the incompleteness of the form, the discontinuity of the space. In Toro Condensed (1983), the circle gains complexity, the area of its shape is denser and more recessed.
No Toro Expanded (2012), three tori, made of wrought iron, are arranged concentrically and with a thin thickness, which highlights not only their physical presence, but also the concentrated spaces between one and another. These works dialogue with the gallery's own thinking, which is also spatially organized in circular layers, and at its center is found Ão (1981), which is based on the principles of the torus.
