Tereza (1998) was first performed in 1998 at the National Museum of Fine Arts (Rio de Janeiro), where the artist gathered a group of men who made braids using pieces of blankets and copper wire. The action referenced the technique used by prisoners to construct ropes large and strong enough to escape from prison.
Tunga's "Terezas" represent an escape from the museum and its academic and elitist standards, interpreted as outdated. Beyond the braids, the space is filled with the sound of the song of the same name, created by the artist and also by the singer and composer Arnaldo Antunes. In Inhotim, the Tereza It was created using 565 blankets, which were braided by the Institute's staff during the gallery's inauguration.
