Robert Irwin began his career as an abstract painter, exhibiting for the first time at the Felix Landau Gallery in Los Angeles (1957). It was during this period that he began to question the limits of the traditional field of art. Since the 1960s, Irwin has explored the relationship of perception in art through immersive environments in installations and interventions that alter physical, sensory, and temporal experience.
