Imposing in stature, the raffia palm has a solitary trunk and the largest leaf among palm trees, which can reach over 20 meters in length. Its cluster of flowers appears when the plant is between 20 and 30 years old. After this event, the plant begins a process of senescence – a slow death that can take several years. From its leaf, the fiber "raffia" is obtained, used in the production of baskets, hats, mats, and dyes.
