This work by Tiravanija makes reference to Maison Tropicale (Tropical House, 1951), a type of prefabricated housing for residents of French colonies in Africa, developed by the French architect Jean Prouvé (1901-1984). The work incorporates several species of palm trees, videos, and display cases with family-related objects. Arecaceae, of which the palm tree is a part. Rirkrit Tiravanija's version, in addition to referencing an icon of modernist architectural history, adds a sociocultural analysis of the botanical species that gives the work its name—a symbol of the tropical imagination—to the purely scientific vision of the Botanical Garden.
This work was originally conceived for the 27th São Paulo Biennial (2006) and, at Inhotim, it receives its first outdoor installation, in collaboration with the Inhotim Botanical Garden team.
