Throughout her life, Aleksandra Mir has experienced four migrations, becoming accustomed to transgressing borders. This stateless experience has given rise to a recurring question in her work, concerning the sociopolitical forces that shape national and local identities.
A série Mediterranean (2007) is the result of the artist's experience in Sicily, an Italian island in the Mediterranean. Here, the territorial masses of nations are reproduced as a negative space. Water presents various signs correlating with the title of the works — Headache (headache), Heartbreak (heartbreak) Heatwave (heat wave), Iceage (Ice Age). Each one is drawn with a variation in the font, bringing Gothic and Modernist inspiration, in a cartoon aesthetic.
