Matthew Barney began his art studies at Yale University in New Haven (USA) in the 1980s. His installations and audiovisual performances address issues related to science and mythology, the body and sexuality, conflict and failure. His contact with the field of medicine is invoked in many of his works. In 1993, he presented one of his most significant works. Drawing Restraint 7, which presents a fusion of fictional and mythological worlds, an analogy to masculinity as performance.

The following year, he presented the film series. CREMASTER (1-5) which evokes questions about sexual development in the male body. The artist has participated in editions of Documenta in Kassel (Germany), the Venice Biennale (Italy), and has exhibited in several museums, such as MoMA – Museum of Modern Art (USA) and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (USA).
