Laboratório Nociferatu (1999-2012) is structured around an important principle for Tunga's production: the double. In the installation, glass and mirror reflect and thus duplicate bells, goblets, and other glass objects arranged on the surface. As one walks around the work, the variation in the incidence of light and the angle of the mirror creates a new point of view from the reflections on the objects.
The notion of the laboratory as a space for investigating matter, and in this case, optics, is a recurring theme in Tunga's work. Here, we see the effect caused by the interplay of mirrors, reminiscent of a camera obscura (an optical device created in the 19th century), which projects the mirrored image onto matte paper, like a ghost image. The title reference alludes to the film's protagonist. Nosferatu (1922), a fictional character who laid the groundwork for the creation of the vampire imaginary in the 20th century.
