Janet Cardiff's initial training was in photography and printmaking at Queen's University (Canada), in 1980. After her experience with filmmaker Georges Miller in 1983, Cardiff began producing works involving sound and sound installations. In her works, she explores emotion, memory, and imagination, with hearing as a central sense in the construction of spaces that permeate fiction and reality.

In addition to participating in editions of the Venice Biennale (Italy), Istanbul Biennial (Turkey) and Documenta in Kassel (Germany), solo exhibitions have recently been held at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey (Mexico, 2019), Oude Kerke Amsterdam (Netherlands, 2018) and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa (Japan, 2017).
