Black rosewood is one of the most valuable woods in the country, and its production has been exploited since colonial Brazil. Because of this, it is on IBAMA's list of endangered species.
Black rosewood is used in luxury carpentry and musical instruments, such as pianos. Widely used in religious art and Brazilian Baroque furniture, the wood is also used in boats by riverside communities along the São Francisco River.
