Inaugurated in 2009, with an architectural design by Arquitetos Associados, the space was initially conceived to house the artwork. The Murder of Crows (2008) by Janet Cardiff and Georges Bures Miller, one of the largest sound installations ever created by the duo. This initial purpose gave the building its name, Galpão Cardiff & Miller. Due to its constructive characteristics – the fact that it is a large exhibition block, practically without internal divisions – it is now called Galeria Galpão and houses everything from large-scale installations to smaller works, of short and medium duration, such as the work O Barco (2021), by Grada Kilomba, a sculptural work composed of 134 blocks of burnt wood extending over 32 meters.
