at installation Forty Part Motet In her 2001 installation, Janet Cardiff assembled eight sets of five speakers, each positioned in a large semicircle. Each speaker reproduced the voice of a member of the Salisbury Cathedral choir (United Kingdom), captured by individual microphones, before the music began and during its performance. As the viewer moves through the installation, they can approach and move away from the speakers to hear the various voices and perceive the different combinations and harmonies between them.

The composition chosen for registration is called Spem in alium nunquam habui [em nenhum outro está minha esperança] Composed by Thomas Tallis in the 16th century to commemorate the fortieth birthday of Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1575.
