Doris Salcedo completed her fine arts studies at the Universidad de Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano (Colombia) in 1980 and earned a master's degree in sculpture from New York University. Her work revolves around accounts of violence, especially political violence, and its consequences, such as disappearance, oblivion, mourning, and memory. Her works stem from collective or individual testimonies, through the appropriation of domestic and everyday objects, imbued with the marks of their histories and original uses. She also uses literary references, such as those of the Romanian-Jewish poet Paul Celan (1920-1970) or the Irish playwright and novelist Samuel Beckett (1906-1989).
He exhibited his works at the Turbine Hall, at Tate Modern (England), participated in the São Paulo and Istanbul biennials, as well as Documenta in Kassel (Germany).
