The name “coité” comes from the Tupi language and means vessel or pot, which is why this plant is also known as cuieira, cuia, or cabaça. Its wood, which is hard and strong, is used in joinery and carpentry.
The fruit, which has a very hard shell, is used in the production of pottery and musical instruments such as the berimbau. Substances for dyeing and medicinal use are also extracted from the plant.
