Carlos Garaicoa studied thermodynamics and painting at the Higher Institute of Art in Havana (1989-1994). In the 1990s, his work began to gain international recognition, given his interest in incorporating "craft techniques," such as carpentry, into his art.

Another hallmark of his work is the multidisciplinary approach to addressing cultural and political issues, particularly Cuban ones, through the study of architecture, urbanism, and history. In recent decades, the artist has held exhibitions in major foreign institutions, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York), and the Tate Modern (London).
