Typically tropical, the imperial bromeliad attracts attention for its sculptural shape, size, and vibrant colors. It occurs naturally on the rocky cliffs of the Serra dos Órgãos (Rio de Janeiro).
The plant is at serious risk of extinction due to the high incidence of fires in its natural habitat and because it is heavily exploited. It can take 10 years to reach adult size and flower. Its flowers are visited by insects and hummingbirds and pollinated by bats.
