Beehive Bunker
2006
Concrete, steel bar for reinforced concrete, steel wire, cast iron manhole cover.
Located at one of the highest points of the Inhotim Institute, Beehive Bunker (2006) simulates a military protective structure, a kind of lookout post, which can only be occupied by one person. The use of this type of solitary fort, a military structure that became popular during the Second World War (1939-1945), reflects Chris Burden's concern with political issues and themes related to social organization and stratification. Built without the aid of machines, the sculpture brings together 332 bags of instant concrete arranged in alternating layers.
Stacking the bags is only the first part of the construction process, which is completed by the passage of time, dissolving the packaging and solidifying the structure.
