Research and conservation
At the Educational Nursery, headquarters of the Botanical Garden, scientific research and the cultivation of species contribute to the construction of knowledge, environmental awareness, and the popularization of science. It houses the Botany Laboratory, a space dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity and which works to propagate rare and difficult-to-cultivate plant species.
Seed bank
This is a space dedicated to storing seeds in cold chambers for long periods. It is a useful resource for maintaining the gardens of the Inhotim Institute and for ecological restoration initiatives, reintroduction into nature, public afforestation projects, and scientific research. There are over 500 seeds stored, representing 74 species, mostly native to the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes, available for exchange or donation to other botanical gardens, institutions, and researchers.

In vitro culture
In vitro cultivation is a valuable tool for propagating endangered and difficult-to-cultivate species. Currently, seedlings of Cattleya walkeriana Gardner, an orchid native to the Cerrado biome and threatened with extinction, are produced in this way at the Botany Laboratory.
Scientific research
The Botanical Garden conducts research on native and endangered species of Brazilian flora and studies plants typical of the Brumadinho region, seeking to develop cultivation protocols and plan medium- and long-term conservation actions. Currently, studies focus on species such as Melanoxylon brauna , popularly known as braúna, species of the genus Syagrus , and orchids of the genus Cattleya.

Climate Fund
In partnership with the Ministry of the Environment, the project "Creation of a Prototype for Carbon Sequestration for the Recovery of Degraded Areas and Community Development" was carried out in Brumadinho from 2012 to 2017, with the participation of the Córrego do Feijão community. The project resulted in several research projects and the acquisition of a significant collection of specialized publications on the themes of degraded area recovery and carbon sequestration, available for research.
