The Inhotim Institute boasts a contemporary art collection focused on site-specific installations and large-scale works, but also including sculptures, photographs, videos, performances, drawings, and paintings dating from the 1960s to the present day. Approximately 560 works by about 60 artists from 38 different countries are currently on display. In addition to the galleries with works on permanent display, the museum has four storage areas that house the remaining works in the collection: sculptures, paintings, photographs, videos, and performances.

Of the 24 galleries, four are dedicated to temporary exhibitions: Lago, Fonte, Praça, and Mata, whose exhibitions are renewed to present new works and create reinterpretations of the collection. In addition, artists are invited to develop new projects – together with the Inhotim team – making the museum a place in constant movement and evolution. 

The 20 permanent galleries showcase works by Tunga, Cildo Meireles, Miguel Rio Branco, Hélio Oiticica & Neville d'Almeida, Adriana Varejão, Doris Salcedo, Victor Grippo, Matthew Barney, Rivane Neuenschwander, Valeska Soares, Doug Aitken, Marilá Dardot, Lygia Pape, Carlos Garaicoa, Carroll Dunham, Cristina Iglesias, William Kentridge, Claudia Andujar, and Yayoi Kusama.
