Valeska Soares   FOLLY 2005-2009
Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 1957; lives in New York, United States

In 2002, Valeska Soares made her first video installation in the former Pampulha casino designed by Oscar Niemeyer, in Belo Horizonte. The video shows dancers gliding on the dance floor of this mid-century architectural masterpiece, and through superpositions of various images, magically meeting and separating. At Inhotim, the artist has created an octagonal pavilion inspired by traditional garden follies and sited at the edge of an isolated lake. It accommodates Folly (2005-2009), whose hauntingly evocative images are forever reflected in the interior’s mirrored walls.
