Albert Oehlen está diretamente comprometido com a história da pintura. Rebeldes, contestadoras e alusivas, suas obras pictóricas são impelidas por um embate explosivo entre linha, cor e forma. Numa época em que a arte conceitual havia rejeitado a pintura, Oehlen privilegiou este meio expressivo. Interessado em expor os fiascos da arte, ele se vale de gêneros e técnicas tradicionais para mostrar os limites da abstração e da representação, descrevendo seu trabalho como "pósnão-representacional". Albert Oehlen também é músico, tendo tocado por anos com a banda de rock de vanguarda The Red Krayola.

Albert Oehlen engages directly with the history of painting. Rebellious, discordant and allusive, his paintings are driven by an explosive collision of line, color and form. At a time when conceptual art had rejected painting, Albert Oehlen re-engaged with the medium. Focusing on exposing art's failures, he borrows from traditional genres and techniques to show the limits of abstraction and representation, describing his work as "post-non-representational." Albert Oehlen is also a musician and has played with the avant-garde rock band The Red Krayola.
